Baja California / The Sea of Cortez

“The Other California”

is a desert that seems to rise out of the ocean so suddenly, it constantly has me on my heels. A mysterious land of incredible light and texture, it captures everyone who visits including the legendary American author John Steinbeck, who wrote about it in The Log from the Sea of Cortez. Baja California is home to one of the first marine protected areas, which originated as a grassroots movement. Baja has a unique marine biodiversity like the elusive vaquita—the smallest and rarest whale in the world—and the islands inside the Gulf have a greater number of endemic species than even the Galapagos Islands.
